TIP: Think about how and where you are going to use your images, Instagram mainly displays square images, lots of websites are designed with a panoramic header. E-commerce sites often need white background product shots but social media images look better with a lifestyle feel.

Writing a brief

What needs shooting and when - A description of what you need, if there is a specific date/time or a deadline you are working towards. Reference shots of the item or place are useful too, if you are unhappy with your existing photography what about it do you dislike. Also any research shots you have on the style you like are really helpful. If you are not sure yet what photography you need have a chat with me, I can help you figure it out.

Where are you - I am a professional photographer working in Cumbria and Lancashire, I am happy to travel throughout these areas to visit your business. If you are further a field why not send your items to my studio. Giving me your locations will help me provide a quote for photography costs.

How many shots you are looking for - It helps me work out photography costs if you have a number of items or a rough idea of how many shots you need, I can help you work this out if you're unsure.

Orientation preference - Does your website have a specific orientation that you need - landscape, portrait, square, panoramic? I normally recommend having a variety of formats shot as then you can use them across the social media platforms but if your site only displays
landscape shots this needs to be considered at the shoot.

Props - I have a large collection of props that I can use to style your images where appropriate, free of charge. Sometime fresh items will need to be purchased such as fruits and flowers and this can be arranged at cost. I can also source items to suit your needs if I don’t have it in my collection.

TIP: Think about themes, does your logo or brand have a colour theme, think about how you could incorporate that into your photography. Is your business modern, sleek, retro or artisan, your photography can be styled to suit you and your business!

What to expect at the shoot

What will the photographer need - If I am coming to you or meeting you at a premises I will bring my studio lighting and equipment. For a product shoot, a clear area of space to set up my table and lights is ideal. For a catalogue style, white background shoot a darker area is best so the light is consistent but for lifestyle shots daylight is fine.

Property styling - I will style rooms as I go, making sure they are tidy, adding props and lighting. If it is a business premises that is in use I will work around clients, customers and staff to get the shots and be careful what lighting I use to minimise safety risks.

Art direction - I am happy to work with you and follow your lead/art direction, with your designers/agency or work solo with a shoot list and brief that we have discussed.

Studio shoot - If I am shooting the items in my studio I will collect them from you or you can arrange for them to be sent via courier.  I send in progress shots for your approval and sets will be left up until the images have been signed off by you.
